Who We Are

Northside Christian Church is an independent Christian Church with a goal of following the principles for the church as described in the New Testament.

What We Believe

  • The Bible is the inspired Word of God, without error, and our guide and authority.
  • All have sinned and are in need of God's forgiveness.
  • That Christ Jesus is the only begotten Son of God who paid the price for our sins by His death on the cross.
  • Jesus conquered death by His resurrection from the tomb.
  • Forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life are given to those who accept Christ as Lord and Savior.
  • That those accepting Christ as Savior must believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, repent of sin, profess their faith in Christ, be baptized by immersion into Christ, and live for Christ.
  • That the church is Christ's body on earth and exists to tell the world the message of Christ and to teach His Word to those who accept Him as Savior.
  • Christ will return to earth to judge all men and women based on their acceptance or rejection of Him as Lord and Savior.

Church History

Northside Christian Church began as Friendly City Church of Christ in 1964. Walt Wilson, an Elder in the Capital City Church of Christ in Raleigh, was instrumental in planting the Friendly City Christian Church. With a few families, the church began meeting in the YMCA building on Trinity Avenue. Later, a house on Landon Street was purchased, and this became the new home of the congregation. Maurice Hylton was called as the first minister and moved into the house. At this time, the congregation again met at the YMCA. Then, in 1971, land was purchased and a building was completed at the corner of Hardee Street and Cheek Road that became the new home of Friendly City Church of Christ.

Harold Ray was called as minister in 1973, and was followed by Gene Pippin. Later, the congregation made a decision to sell the building and move to another area of the city. In the fall of 1980, the congregation began worship services at the Mt. Sylvan Ruritan Club building on Roxboro Road. The name of the church was changed to Northside Christian Church to reflect the area of the city in which the church was now located.

In August 1981, the present building and land were purchased, and the congregation moved to the new location at 3901 Cole Mill Road. The Lord had blessed the congregation with a wonderful location, a beautiful auditorium and educational building, and over four acres of land.

Following Gene Pippin, Troy Hasty, Jim Joiner, and Tim Smith served the congregation as ministers. Currently, Larry East serves the congregation as preaching minister.

The year 2019 marks the 38th Anniversary that Northside Christian Church has met at 3901 Cole Mill Road and we are now in the 54th year of the church's existence. Over the years, many have come to know Christ as their Savior due to the witness of Northside Christian Church. We praise God for the many blessings that He has given to this church and pray that God will use us to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that the Lord has commanded."
